With so many outstanding and proven facial treatments available today, it can sometimes be confusing for people to identify the best cosmetic treatment for their needs. Dermaplaning is unique among facial treatments, as it is designed to smooth the surface of the facial skin by removing fine, vellus hairs (sometimes known as peach fuzz). To help people better understand this treatment and the benefits it can provide, we wanted to debunk a few of the more persistent myths about dermaplaning.
Myth #1: People with sensitive skin cannot undergo dermaplaning treatments
This is false. In fact, when performed by the experienced cosmetic providers here at MadEmEl Medical Aesthetics, dermaplaning treatments are safe for all skin types and tones. However, just to be on the safe side, we always consult with our patients first to confirm that they are good candidates for dermaplaning treatments. This is because there are some conditions such as acne and rosacea that may require a pre-treatment, specific method, or combination treatment.
Myth #2: Dermaplaning can be performed at home
We would not recommend this. The results achieved with professional dermaplaning treatments performed by an experienced, board-certified cosmetic provider cannot be effectively replicated at home. Additionally, there are safety concerns to consider as well. Although there is some belief that dermaplaning can damage the skin barrier in some cases, this is only a risk for people who attempt to perform dermaplaning at home instead of visiting a trained aesthetic professional as each skin type requires its own specific method.
Myth #3: Dermaplaning can lead to acne breakouts and other facial blemishes
Quite the opposite. By gently exfoliating the facial skin, dermaplaning can help prevent potential breakouts, not cause them. Dermaplaning can help prevent acne flare-ups by making sure the facial pores remain unclogged with dead skin cells. Additionally, dermaplaning can actually improve acne by making it easier for other acne treatments and skin serums to more deeply penetrate into the pores and prevent future breakouts.
